Antique lighting is not something you see in many homes today. Most people that do have working antique fixtures in their home have had them converted from gas lighting to electric fixtures. This is because gas is not a normal source for providing light in homes anymore.
Most of the antique lighting that you see today was at one time or another operated by gas. Many people used gas as a source for having light in their homes. The few antique light fixtures that did use electricity required a very low wattage light bulb. Usually a 25-watt bulb or less. At the time the light fixtures were not made to handle high wattage bulbs, and probably would have blown the bulb or caught fire if a higher wattage bulb was used.
Antique lighting fixtures are still around and available for sale from many antique dealers across the country. If you are interested in these antique beauties, you might enjoy going around to your local antique dealers to see if any of them have antique fixtures for sale. Of course keep in mind, the older the antiques, the higher the price you will pay, especially for one that is near original condition. Although, finding a perfect antique fixture may prove to be a bit challenge, finding one that is in need of TLC might be a little easier.
Antique lighting restorers are still around. If you have one of your grandmother's old lamps and what to have it restored, look in the yellow pages of your phone book for a local antique restorer. You could even contact your local antique dealer to see if they have a restorer they recommend.
When choosing a restorer for your antique fixtures, choose one that is reputable and will restore your antique properly. Make sure they are insured and bonded before you leave your precious antique with them. Taking these steps of caution may save you from being ripped off.
Looking to have your antique fixture appraised? If you are looking for an appraisal for your antique lighting, ask your local antique dealer if they give free appraisals or know of someone that does. Perhaps your state has an annual antique show that you can take your antique fixtures to and have it appraised.
Antique fixtures attracts different people for many reasons. Maybe you are drawn to it because you used it as a kid. Perhaps you are interested in antique fixtures because it reminds you of your grandmother's home. It may even be possible that you are an antique collector that collects antique fixtures as well as many other things. Whatever your particular reason may be, enjoy it.
