Many of the online companies allow you to customize your lamps to your specific needs. The craftsmen are happy to provide you with a unique product. It's a terrific option for those who know what they want right down to the last detail! There are 5 different antler types to consider for your lamps.

    1. Faux Antlers For those of you that like the look of the lamps but cannot fathom having "real deer" antlers in your home faux antlers are a great choice. The quality is superb and no one will ever know unless you tell them. Another reason for opting for faux is price. Antler lamps can be very expensive but the faux lamps are very affordable.

    2. Elk The elk antlers make for what can only be described as a drop dead gorgeous lamp. And because of their size you get a terrific selection in size and style. The beam that sweeps both up, back, and out has a nice artistic effect on the lamp.

The younger the bull the smaller the antlers for your lamp will be. A 2 year old bull will drop spiked antlers that are from 8 to 15 inches long, but wait a year and they'll have 4 or 5 points. After the age of 5 the antlers have a minimum of 6 points and are much heavier and larger. By the age of 11 they have a superior set of antlers with as many as 10 points and reaching 5 feet with a whopping weight of more than 25 pounds. We are talking impressive!

Since elk shed their antlers once a year you've got lots of variety in the size of the antlers and the color.

    3. Mule Deer Mule deer antlers range from 28 inches to much larger at 48 inches. They are quite large and commonly used for chandeliers but occasionally used for lamps as well.

The buck sheds his antlers sometime in December each year. They spread can easily be 4 feet so they are a great choice for light fixtures. And because of the abundance of mule deer they are also one of the most affordable antler lamps around.

    4. Fallow Deer Because the fallow deer antlers are so unique they make very interesting lamps and chandeliers. It's not uncommon for them to reach a 50 inch diameter. It is also not used as frequently as some of the other deer antlers which can be seen in the pricing.

The bucks develop spike antlers that begin to develop in their first year and continue to grow until 3-4 years old. The cast only antlers comprised of beams and simple points.

    5. White Tail Deer The white tail deer lamps are available in a nice range of sizes and weights. They are also commonly used for chandeliers.

The bucks shed their antlers each year. Deer antlers are actually the fastest growing tissue that man knows about growing about ˝" per day and they become covered with a live material that is called velvet that is eventually rubbed off. So in just one season you can have a fair size rack to work with.

A one year buck can have spikes. Spike bucks shed earlier than branched bucks. At around 5 the white-tailed deer are mature often producing trophy racks which make superior lamps and chandeliers.

And in case you thought antlers were cruel, both the deer and elk shed their antlers each year. Then new antlers begin to grow back in and the cycle repeats itself. This is a very unique product because each year presents itself with a different size rack that can be used.
