    Decorative Outdoor Lighting

Decorative outdoor lighting is generally found at the local pool store. The main attribute of outdoor lighting is simply that it is weather resistant. The resistance of an object to weather is important for two reasons.

The sturdier an outdoor light fixture is, the longer it will last. Keep this in mind when pricing outdoor lighting. As you will quickly notice, quality decorative outdoor lighting is considerably more expensive than other types of lighting materials.

You get what you pay for. When it comes to decorative outdoor lighting, this rule should be applied with extra care. As you'll quickly notice, nice outdoor lighting pieces can easily run into the several hundreds, for larger, weather-proof light stands.

You will have these lighting pieces next to your outdoor pool or barbeque area for years to come. It is worth spending the extra money now, so that you will not spend more money in the long run, replacing worn out decorative outdoor lighting pieces and fixtures.

Another thing to consider about outdoor lighting is the types of bulbs that you will use. There are many quality light bulbs made to last several years. Though these types of extra long life bulbs will cost more than regular, more disposable bulbs, you will see the savings over the years that you spend nothing on replacement bulbs.

What type of area will you be lighting outside? Are there mosquitoes in your area? These are important questions when it comes to the type of light bulbs that you will use in your outdoor lighting .

If your area is particularly mosquito affected, you will want to buy only the types of light bulbs that do not attract bugs. These kinds of light bulbs are always clearly labeled on the packages. For the most part, any light that is more yellow or orange than white or blue-white, will attract fewer bugs.

Do you have an outdoor eating or spa area that will be used frequently? If so, you should consider using a combination of pest control along with lights best for not attracting insects. You can form a barrier with citronella coils or candles farther away from the area where people are the thickest.

Using either citronella coils or some other type of (preferably natural) insect deterrent to form a barrier is always a good technique for controlling insects where people tend to converge. This barrier technique allows insect control, while keeping the offensive insect repellant away from the areas that are thicker with people.

When choosing lighting for your outdoor areas, first select lights for any special areas, such as pool or patio areas. Then you should decide on general field area lights and pathway lighting. For general ambient lighting, you may choose to perch lights up in the trees. Choose lights that have a soft and wide light span for softer lighting.

One area that is frequently overlooked when it comes to outdoor lighting are pathways. For example, lighting should be placed every three to four feet along any pathway going to and from the house, garage and other outdoor spots, to ensure that people can see at night time.

Be creative and have fun. With all the outdoor lighting styles and solutions to choose from, you can create the perfect custom lighting scheme to set off your outdoor fun spots!
