Chandeliers have become very trendy in home décor. In fact pick up any decorating magazine or visit any online decorating sites and almost all of them will tell you to choose a chandelier for your room. But what if you want to be different then everyone else choose a slag glass chandelier.
Now this isn't going to be as easy a find as picking something more traditional like a glass or crystal chandelier but think of the fun you'll have looking for it and you'll have a chandelier that's much more unique than everyone else.
Slag glass is the term that's used by collectors to describe pressed glass that is opaque and has colored streaks through it. Slag glass dates back to the 1800s but the term slag is a more recent term based on the theory that these streaks of color were a result of iron smelting works to the glass. Back in the 1800s they were called brown malachite, marble glass, or even brown marble vitro porcelain.
The streaks are commonly found in purple. White and cream are also common. Blue, brown, and green although around are far less common. During the 1880s through to the 1890s Sowerby, Davidson, and Greener all manufactured slag glass. Its popularity then waned but today you are seeing a few manufacturers like Boyd Glass once again begin to produce it.
Victorian chandeliers commonly used slag glass on the shades. In fact slag was commonly combined with an ornately detailed metal shade then accented with the slag panels. If you're wondering where to find one of these neat slag chandeliers here are some ideas.

Brass chandeliers began to appear in homes in the early 1700s and demand for large cut facet chandeliers began to grow in popularity for music rooms and the like. By the mid 1800s the styles had gone to a more lavish, heavier glass, and by the time slag glass appeared it was a welcome change.
Today we see slag glass as a welcome change again! Sure there are hundreds of different chandeliers to choose from but when everyone else is looking at the same styles it's not nearly as much fun as finding something that's just a little more unique or unusual. Add a slag glass chandelier to your room and you'll be making a décor statement like no other.
