Retro is big and if you've been planning a retro kitchen then you are going to need a sputnik chandelier. After all what could look better than a space age chandelier to finish your room?
So are you ready to transform that boring kitchen into a funky retro kitchen? Well let's get started.
Paint
You can probably paint your kitchen for under $100 unless of course you have a really large kitchen. My favorite color choice for a retro kitchen is Chartreuse - that green/yellow tone is hard to beat and Sherwin Williams and Moore both have an excellent shade. However you choose your own favorite color after all it's your kitchen. This is going to be your wall color. If you'd like a bit more contrast have it deepened 2 shades and use to feature one of your walls. If your kitchen is quite small this technique is not recommended.
Cabinets
Now it's time to give the cabinets a face lift. Go shopping for some funky hardware that fits your retro theme. Replace handles and hinges. If you want to add character choose unusual handles like bottle caps. Choose a complimentary color to your wall color and choose a paint with a texture finish. This adds a fresh finish and it's perfect for that retro look.
If you're hunting for that unusual hardware don't forget to check a variety of online websites including eBay which is often the perfect shopping destination for those unusual finds.
Curtains
To complete your retro kitchen you are going to need retro fabric for your curtains. You want boldness!! Choose a fabric that stands out. Black and white zig zags, large bold flowers, anything that screams 60s or 70s. You can get very creative with the rod too. For example you can use a shower tension rod and shower hooks for easy attachment. Make sure you add some funky tie backs such as beads or roping.
Lighting
Your kitchen will need a couple of fixtures but the fixture that is going to absolutely add the finishing touch to the room will be your sputnik chandelier. Nothing could look better. And the perfect place for it will be on top of your peninsula table. Or if you can't do a peninsula table then above your regular kitchen table.
If you aren't sure what a sputnik chandelier is think high tech space age modern retro décor. Think perfect for your room. A quick search online will provide you with plenty of choices and you'll have the right one for your room in no time.
Table
If your room is capable of handling it the perfect table is a peninsula table which attaches to the wall with a support bracket and then has two front legs. The solid maple tables are the great and there are also some metal styles that work well in a retro décor. Of course you can always use a traditional style table if you have to.
Chairs
Head off to your local thrift store and find two chairs that don't match. Then either use the same fabric you did for your curtains or a complimentary fabric and re-upholster. They'll look perfect!
Shelving
If your kitchen has the space wall shelves can be win win providing you with additional storage and a great way to add some collectibles that fit your retro theme.
Flooring
Hardwood flooring with a bold and bright geometric throw rug looks great, or off the wall floor tiles like a marbled black and white, or a geometric pattern. If you use bold tiling then choose a throw rug that's a solid color and contrasting to your wall colors.
That's it - you'll have your retro kitchen complete in no time. Remember when shopping for that Sputnik chandelier that it should provide you with the ultimate out of this world space age experience. Then you know you've found the right one!
