Swag lamps appeared on the scene back in the 1950s and really gained popular in the 1970s. Almost every home had at least one Lucite swag lamp hanging around on a 10 foot chain. Today swag lamps look great in a retro room or as garden art.
These days our yards and outdoor space is as important to us as our indoor space and thus we spend a great deal of time setting a mood in the space we'll be entertaining. And that's were swag lamps come in. They make a great addition to a deck, patio, or backyard space where you are planning to entertain.
And when it comes to garden art, isn't the object to do it better and different than the neighbors? So how about letting that creativity flow?
Your deck or garden is a place to relax and unwind. It's a place of beauty and it's a place to add your personal charm. Those huge Lucite swags that look somewhat hideous thrown in a box at your local flee market; actually look downright stunning in your outdoor space.
But what looks even more impressive is the large colored glass swags. Remember the beautiful shades of amber, green, brown, gold, and blue? Well why not mix it up a bit?
Swags work great hanging on the deck corners. You can stagger the chain lengths to give the area a different look. And if you are really creative you can strip down a swag, flip it over, and create some interesting flower pots or candle holders. They work great for holding pillar candles.
In the back yard you can use several swag lamps to outline your get together area. Replace 60 watt bulbs with 20 watt bulbs and you'll create a very nice ambiance. The perfect mood for great laughs with friends.
And of course swags look great in a retro room! In fact they are simply a must. And two is always better than one! But what if you don't have a retro room and you just can't bear the thought of no swag?
Well you are going to have to get creative then. Let's face it swags are pretty distinctive and there are plenty of decors that they just aren't going to look good in. However you can almost always get away with a swag in the corner of a bedroom. So that's one way of keeping that favorite lamp nearby.
If you insist it must be in the living room then try to build a funky retro corner that ties to the swag. Make it a focal point and have some fun.
If you're lucky enough to have one of those black and white spaghetti swags then you're going to be able to have a lot of fun in almost any room. And these look great with a contemporary décor. In fact they look spectacular!
So gather up your swag lamps and start getting creative. There's certainly plenty of life and uses left for them!
